On March 26, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a proclamation addressing national security reasons based on Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, imposing a 25% tariff on imports of automobiles and automobile parts.
The 25% tariff will apply to the import of passenger vehicles, including: sedans, SUVs, crossovers, minivans, cargo vans and light trucks, as well as key car parts (engines, transmissions, powertrain parts and electrical components), with the possibility of extending tariffs on additional parts if deemed necessary.
USMCA-compliant auto parts will remain tariff-free until the Secretary of Commerce, in consultation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), establishes a process for applying tariffs to non-U.S. content.
These new tariffs are aimed at ensuring that the United States can maintain its domestic industrial base and meet national security needs.
